Yearly Albums Polls Best Of The Year

Alongside the Hottest 100, Triple J also features a lesser known music poll that is designed to discover the most popular albums of the year. Unlike the Hottest 100, which is held at the start of the following calendar year, the album poll is released at the end of the current calendar year.

The top 10 albums that are voted by listeners are usually announced during the last edition of Richard Kingsmill's new music program at the end of the year; serving as a way to wrap up the current edition of his radio show. The poll started back in 1997, and alongside the listener's poll, Richard Kingsmill has also released his top 10 albums annually as well.

An italicised entry indicates that the album in question held the winning track for that year's Hottest 100 countdown.

Notes

  • The 1999 Hottest 100's #1 track was 'These Days' by Powderfinger, and was featured on their album 'Odyssey Number Five' and the soundtrack to the film 'Two Hands'. The absence of this album from the listener's poll marks the second time that the album of the winning Hottest 100 track did not make the countdown. However, the album featured in the following year's poll, which was due to the winning song being released as a single in the year prior to the album being released.

Notes

  • The inclusion of Augie March's 'Moo, You Bloody Choir' and Muse's 'Black Holes & Revelations' in the album poll marks the first and to date, only, time that an album poll has featured two albums that had tracks that reached #1 in the Hottest 100. The tracks in question were Augie March's 'One Crowded Hour' in 2006, and Muse's 'Knights Of Cydonia' in 2007. This is largely due to the fact that despite Muse's track 'Knights Of Cydonia' being released in 2006, along with the rest of the album, it did not gain significant exposure in Australia until 2007.

  • The 2006 J Award winner was the Hilltop Hoods with their album 'The Hard Road', which also reached #10 in the album poll.

  • Cut Copy's appearance at #20 with 'Zonoscope' makes then the first artist since 2008 to feature in the album poll but not place in the Hottest 100 for that year. However, tracks from that album were revealed to have made the #101-200 list.

  • Architecture In Helsinki's 'Moment Bends' is the first album to feature in an album poll that has featured in non-consecutive Hottest 100 countdowns. The song 'That Beep' was featured in the 2008 countdown, while 'Contact High' and 'Escapee' were featured in the 2011 countdown.

Notes

  • The 2013 album poll marks the second time in a row that the release featuring the #1 song from the Hottest 100 for that year did not make the list. However, 2013 was also the first time that the winning song came from an EP (Vance Joy's 'God Loves You When You're Dancing') and not an album, making it ineligble to chart in the album poll. However, the song was featured on Vance Joy's debut album the following year, which reached #8 in the album poll, marking the second time since 2000 that the corresponding releases for 2 #1 songs were in the same countdown.
