Facts for 1995

The 1995 Hottest 100 was the third annual Hottest 100 countdown since the change of the format which allowed only songs from the previous year to be voted for.

The Countdown

The countdown took place in January of 1996 and featured a mixture of 78 different artists.

Björk's cover of Betty Hutton's 'It's Oh So Quiet' at #5 is currently the equal-highest position that a cover song has reached. It was also later accomplished by Spiderbait in 2004 with 'Black Betty', and again by Boy & Bear in 2010 with their cover of 'Fall At Your Feet'.

At #23, Passengers charted with their song 'Miss Sarajevo'. The song includes the line "Is there a time for first communion, a time for East 17? Is there a time to turn to Mecca? Is there a time to be a beauty queen?"
East 17 were an English band who featured in the 1993 countdown with their song 'Deep', which reached #78. While there is some contention as to whether Bono is actually referring to the group themselves, or the London area which the band named themselves after, it seems to be the general consensus that it is the band being mentioned.

Alanis Morrisette managed to gain three entries in the countdown despite having none of her songs played by Triple J that year.

U2 managed to feature twice in the countdown under seperate names. They reached #57 using the name U2, but reached #23 under the name 'Passengers', which is effectively a collaboration between themselves, composer Brian Eno and opera performer Luciano Pavarotti.

Artists Featured

For the first time, no single artist outright dominated the countdown, however Dave Navarro and Flea, the then-guitarist and bassist respectively of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, appeared 4 times. Three times with the Red Hot Chili Peppers and once as backing musicians for Alanis Morisette in her song 'You Oughta Know'.

Alanis Morrisette, Green Day, Live, Red Hot Chili Peppers, TISM and You Am I all managed to chart with 3 tracks each. TISM managed the highest entry, reaching #9. 11 other artists managed to achieve 2 entries.

A Note

'Miss Sarejavo', at #23, by the band Passengers is a collaboration between U2, Brian Eno, and Luciano Pavarotti, making the track Irish, English and Italian, respectively. However, for the sake of simplicity, it is simply listed as Irish.
