Facts for 2005
The 2005 Hottest 100 was the thirteenth annual Hottest 100 countdown since the change of the format which allowed only songs from the previous year to be voted for.
The Countdown
The countdown took place in January of 2006 and featured a mixture of 59 different artists which is currently the lowest amount of artists in a single countdown. The countdown was broadcast live from the Sydney Big Day Out festival, which was held on the same day.
2005 also features the distinction of having Wolfmother reach 6 tracks in the countdown. Although Dave Grohl was involved with 10 tracks in 2002 and Jack White reached 6 tracks in 2003, this is the the first time that a band had done so.
The 2005 countdown was won by Bernard Fanning, making him the first person to win the countdown 3 times. He has previously been a winner in 1999 and 2000 with his involvement with Powderfinger. Additionally, Fanning is one of the few #1 placegetters to be a solo performer. In addition to Fanning, Denis Leary (1993), Alex Lloyd (2001), Vance Joy (2013), Chet Faker (2013), and Kendrick Lamar (2017) also topped the chart as a solo performer.
With 'Catch My Disease' at #2, the 2005 Hottest 100 marks the second time that Ben Lee has reached the #2 position.
Gorillaz became the third band to achieve 2 tracks in the top 5. This was done previously by The Offspring in 1994 and Powderfinger in 2000 and was also done by Kings of Leon and MGMT in 2008.
At #11, 'Figjam', by Butterfingers, features a small snippet of the song '77%', by The Herd. In the 2003 countdown, '77%' was voted into #46.
DVDA reached #51 with their song 'America, Fuck Yeah!' from the film 'Team America: World Police'. This is only one of a few movie themes to be voted in. The others being from the movies 'Mission: Impossible' in 1996, 'Mission: Impossible II' in 2000, 'Somersault' in 2004 and the James Bond film 'Quantam Of Solace' in 2008.
At #61, Green Day's track 'Jesus Of Suburbia' becomes the equal longest song in a countdown. At 9:08, it is equal only to Kanye West's 'Runaway' in 2010.
At #72, The Bedroom Philosopher made his first appearance with his song 'I'm So Postmodern'. Similarly, The Herd's appearance with 'I Was Only 19' at #18 was the first time that a track from Triple J's Like A Version sessions made it in. On Wednesday, February 22nd (one day short of 5 weeks after the countdown), The Bedroom Philosopher made an appearance on Like A Version to perform his 'Hottest 100 Acoustic Megamix'. Due to reasons of copyright, it is not available on either the artist's, or Triple J's, websites. However, it was made available on The Bedroom Philosopher's website briefly after the performance. The 'Acoustic Megamix' was a cover of 30 of the songs that had featured in the countdown.

Additionally, 'Party Started' holds the distinction as being the song that put Australia into theleading position for the most entries for a country in a countdown. At the end of the 2004 countdown, Australia and the United States had featured an equal 459 songs each throughout the countdowns. The Cat Empire's appearance tipped Australia into a leading position they have not reliinquished to date.
The countdown also features the moderately rare distinction of having no artists reach consecutive entries. This has also happened in 1993, 1996, 1997, 2000, 2007, 2008 and 2010.
