Facts for 2001

The 2001 Hottest 100 was the ninth annual Hottest 100 countdown since the change of the format which allowed only songs from the previous year to be voted for.

The Countdown

The countdown took place in January of 2002 and featured a mixture of 73 different artists.

Alex Lloyd is one of the few #1 placegetters to be a solo performer. In addition to Lloyd, Denis Leary (1993), Bernard Fanning (2005), Vance Joy (2013), and Chet Faker (2013) also topped the chart as a solo performer.

At #16, 28 Days featured with 'Say What?', a collaboration with Apollo 440. The song includes the line "It's clear to me that they don't give a shit what the kids think, 'cause I can't tell the difference between Linkin Park and 'N Sync". While 'N Sync, nor any of the group's members have not featured in a countdown as yet, Linkin Park made their, to date, only appearance in the countdown in 2001 with 'One Step Closer' at #55.

At #22, Ben Harper & The Innocent Criminals charted with their cover of The Verve's 'The Drugs Don't Work'. The original version charted at the same position back in 1997.

The 2001 countdown was also the first time since the countdown's yearly inception in 1993 that Dave Grohl did not feature.

The countdown also featured a comical finish when the announcers of the #1 song, then breakfast radio hosts Adam Spencer and Wil Anderson played their own track in place of the correct song. Their song, 'Sorry Matt Hayden', (which can be listened to here) was a parody of Outkast's 'Ms Jackson', and featured lyrics focusing on Australian cricketer Matt Hayden. Ironically, 'Ms Jackson' featured in the countdown the following year, when The Vines' cover made the list. Then, in 2003, Outkast almost reached #1, instead charting at #2 with their song 'Hey Ya!".
Interstingly enough though, in 1995 Mindless Drug Hoover reached #12 with 'The Reefer Song'. Mindless Drug Hoover is effectively solo project for a English musician whose name happens to be Matt Hayden.
